“Excellence: Skill or Attitude”
A gentleman once visited a place under construction where he saw a sculptor making a statute. Suddenly he noticed a similar statute lying nearby.
Surprised, he asked the sculptor, "Do you need two statues of the same kind?"
" No," said the sculptor without looking up, "We need only one, but the first one got damaged at the last stage."
The gentleman examined the statute and found no apparent damage… "Where is the damage?" he asked.
"There is a scratch on the nose of the statute," said the sculptor, still busy with his work.
"Where are you going to install the statute?"
The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty feet high.
"If the statute is that high, who is going to know that there is a scratch on the nose?" the gentleman asked.
The sculptor stopped his work, looked up at the gentleman, smiled and said, "I know it and God knows it!"
My derivation of the message conveyed~
The desire to excel should be exclusive of the fact whether someone appreciates it or not.
Excellence is a drive from inside, not outside.
Excel at a task today – not necessarily for someone else to notice but for your own satisfaction.
Remember, "Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude." – Ralph Marston

The Law of the Seed
Take a look at an apple tree. There might be five hundred apples on the tree, each with ten seeds. That’s a lot of seeds. We might ask, "Why would you need so many seeds to grow just a few more trees?"
Nature has something to teach us here. It’s telling us: "Most seeds never grow. So if you really want to make something happen, you should better try more than once."
This might mean:
You’ll attend twenty interviews to get one job.
You’ll interview forty people to find one good employee.
You’ll talk to fifty people to sell one house, car, vacuum cleaner, insurance policy, or idea.
And you might meet a hundred acquaintances to find one special friend.
When we understand the ‘Law of the Seed’, we don’t get so disappointed. We stop feeling like victims. We just need to understand them – and work with them.
Successful people fail more often. They plant more seeds.
On the other hand, let's say you expect that:
Friends SHOULD return favours.
People SHOULD appreciate you.
Planes SHOULD arrive on time.
Everyone SHOULD be honest.
Your husband or best friend SHOULD remember your birthday.
These expectations may sound reasonable. But often, these things won't happen! So you end up frustrated and disappointed.
There's a better strategy. Demand less, and instead, have preferences! For things that are beyond your control, tell yourself:
"I WOULD PREFER "A", BUT IF "B" HAPPENS, IT'S OK TOO!"
You prefer that people are polite.. but when they are rude, it doesn't ruin your day.
You prefer sunshine.. but if it rains, it is ok too!
To become happier, we either need to:
a) Change the world, or
b) Change our thinking.
It is easier to change our Thinking!
IN A NUTSHELL~
It is not the problem that is the issue, but rather it is our attitude attending to the problem that is the problem. It's not what happens to you that determine your happiness but rather how you think about what happens to you!

The Two Angels
Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold basement.
As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied… “Things aren't always what they seem”.
The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel “how could you have let this happen!? The first man had everything, yet you helped him,” she accused. “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let their cow die.”
“Things aren't always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmers bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave her the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”
Sometimes this is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later.

The Phone Call
A girl quickly punches a number into her phone and waits until she hears the other line pick up.
“keirti, I don’t know what to do, I really don’t. I love him so much and I don’t think he thinks of me that way. I mean, whenever I see him or think of him, I can’t help it, this smile comes across my face. Sometimes he sees me smiling and smiles back. That’s when my knees turn to jello and I get butterflies in my stomach. I know you think that he’s is so totally adorable and cute, but if you look past that and actually listen to what he has to say, you find a totally cute and nice person. He’s so caring and considerate and he makes me feel like I don’t deserve him. Well, actually, I don’t deserve him. He’s too perfect, I mean, look at all the girls that fall over for him. I could never be one of those. They are all so pretty and bubbly and….. not me. I couldn’t even start to compare myself to them. But whenever I think of him or see him, I can’t help it, I smile. Now I didn’t tell you this but he called me the other day about homework. I tell you now, I made a complete fool of myself. I’m so embarrassed. I stuttered the whole time, but he was so sweet and just kept talking and making me feel better. He’s so perfect Keirti, I don’t deserve him, so why do I keep wishing and praying that he will notice me, why?............keirti? keirti are you there?”
“This isn’t keirti.”
Petrified the girl asks, “Then who is this?”
“ This is the guy who’s smile turns your knees to jello and I just wanted to say one thing. Everything you just said now, I’ve been wanting to say since the day I met you.”

A Nice Thought
A wise man once sat in the audience & cracked a joke.
All laughed like crazy. After a moment he cracked the same joke again and a little less people laughed this time.
He cracked the same joke again & again, when there was no laughter in the crowd,
He smiled and said,
"When u can't laugh on the same joke again & again, then why do u keep crying over the same thing over and over again."
'Forget the past & move on'
When Life Is No Joke, Laugh Anyway (An Excerpt)
Laughter liberates and laughter uplifts. When laughter comes into a life, nothing is too difficult, nothing can defeat us. We can survive the noonday sun and the darkness of death and the grinding boredom of dailiness and still find life exhilarating. Other things in life change colour like chameleons on plaid, but laughter is always ornament, always grace.
There are some things that must always be laughed at in life:
1. Laugh when people tell a joke. Otherwise you might make them feel bad.
2. Laugh when you look into a mirror. Otherwise you might feel bad.
3. Laugh when you make a mistake. If you don't, you're liable to forget how ultimately unimportant the whole thing really is, whatever it is.
4. Laugh with small children. It will restore your delight in the fundamental things of life. It will also improve your sense of humor. Have you ever noticed what children laugh at? They laugh at mashed bananas on their faces; mud in their hair; a dog nuzzling their ears; the sight of their bottoms as bare as silk. It renews your perspective. Clearly, nothing is as bad as it could be.
5. Laugh at situations that are out of your control. When the best man comes to the altar without the wedding ring, laugh. When the dog jumps through the window screen at the dinner guests on your doorstep, sit down and laugh awhile. When you find yourself in public wearing mismatched shoes, laugh--as loudly as you can. Why collapse in mortal agony? There’s nothing you can do to change things now. Besides, it is funny. Ask me; I’ve done it.
6. Laugh at anything pompous, at anything that needs to puff its way through life in robes and titles. Because laughter is a social virtue, it will help the rest of us see the difference between what is authentic in life and what is not. Will Rogers laughed at all the public institutions of modern life. For instance, “You can’t say civilization isn’t advancing,” he wrote. “In every war they kill you in a new way.” And thanks to his laughter we began to see what was going on around us in fresh and shocking perspective.
7. Finally, laugh when all your carefully laid plans get changed: when the plane is late and the restaurant is closed and the last day’s screening of the movie of the year was yesterday. You’re free now to do something else, to be spontaneous for a change, to take a piece of life and treat it with outrageous abandon.

As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world. It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other "seniors" who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither.
Harold Jenkins is such a person:
THIS IS QUOTED FROM HAROLD:
"I've often been asked, 'What do you do now that you're retired?'
Well, I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer, wine, and whiskey into urine. It's rewarding, uplifting, satisfying, and fulfilling. I do it every day and I really enjoy it."

The Measure of a Man
A few years back I started reading the book written by Sidney Poitier and until now I have not finished reading-nothing new!! I was looking around and stumbled upon the same title and was captivated by the lines and I decided to share it.
The Measure of a Man
Author Unknown/Anonymous
Not “How did he die?” But “How did he live?”
Not “What did he gain?” But “What did he give?”
Not “What was his station?” But “Had he a heart?”
And “How did he play his God-given part?”
Not “What was his shrine?” Nor “What was his creed?”
But “Had he befriended those really in need?”
Not “What did the piece in the newspaper say?”
But “How many were sorry when he passed away?”
Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth

Akshaya thrithiya
1. Pandavas received the Akshaya Pathram (a bowl in which anything placed will never diminish) from Lord Krishna (in the Mahabharata) on this day.
2.It is believed sage Vyasa invoked Lord Ganesha to start the beginning of composition of the most celebrated hindu epic- The bharatha(Mahabharatha)
3.Sudhama(lord krishna's childhood friend) visiting lord Krishna with a handful of beaten rice(hence in hindu tradition people do not visit anyone without carrying an eatable to anybody's house specially if there are kids in the visitor's house.
4.Goddess Annapoorna was born on the auspicious day
5.Lord Shiva came down from the kailash parvatha in form of a beggar to accept the bhiksha(alms) from the goddess Annapoorna
6.Kubera, the Banker in heaven, also got his position on Akshaya Tritiya.
Also in the puranas there is a description of a particular story associated with a merchant.here it goes-
During the ancient times,
there was a merchant who was so poverty-stricken that he found
it difficult to afford even one square meal a day. However,
he was intensely religious and noticing his
devotion the elders explained to him the greatness of Akshaya Tritiya.
The poor merchant decided to follow their advice.
On an Akshaya Tritiya day, he woke up at dawn,
bathed and offered food, water, sugarcane juice, milk and money to poor Brahmins.
he followed all the necessary austerities as advised by the
elders. Due to his sincere efforts, he was born as Kushapathy Chakravarthy in his next birth,
say the Puranas.
This day is very blessed for your departed ancestors. You can yourself do a ritual offering on this day before sunset. Place black sesame seeds and rice or rice powder on your right palm. Pour water over the items. Think of your departed ancestors and offer the rice powder and sesame. After this ritual, discard the material. This will do a lot of good for you.

shravana and Death of king Dasharatha
On the fateful day, as it happened, the king could not hunt any animal. He was tired and was bit dejected and irritated at this failure. Just then, from a distant pond there arose the sound, as if some animal were drinking water. The king could not directly see who was there, but he guessed that it must be some animal- his hunting prey! The usually well balanced mind of the king thought for a while to reach the pond and then hunt down the prey. But the king was so much tired that he decided to use his skill of hitting the arrow at the sound and finish his job. He put the arrow on the bow, waited for the next sound to reach his ear, and hit the target in a flash.
And what a tragedy! The arrow did hit the target, but the cry which tore the peace and tranquility of the jungle was not of an animal, but of a young boy! The kind heart of the king melted like the butter over fire.
Disturbed, he rushed to the pond and saw, as feared, a young boy fatally wounded with his arrow in the chest. Tears flowed down the eyes of the king. He took the boy in his lap, put a few drops of water in his mouth to wet his drying lips, and inquired: "O, young one, what brought you to this lonely place? Are you alone or, are there any co-travelers with you? What a grave mistake I have committed! How can I rectify this now?"
On hearing the king spoke thus, the boy pacified the king and said:
"O, King, I am a Brahmin boy. My name is Shravana. My parents are old and blind. I am taking them to pilgrimage all over this noble land of Bharata (India). I carry them on my shoulders in huge baskets attached to the bamboo with the ropes (kawad in our dialect). My parents are waiting at some distance for me. I was here to fetch water for them. I am their only support. Now I am worried that they may not survive after hearing the news of my death. I am also not sure whether you can help them because sooner or later they would come to know that you are responsible for all this. O, noble king, please take me to them as I am afraid my life-force may leave the body any time now."
With these words of great remorse and pathos, the young Shravana died in the lap of the king.
Confused and with heavy heart, tortured by the thought of the ignoble deed for which his impatience and indiscretion were responsible, the king slowly went to the old parents. He put the body of the Shravana in front of them. The sensitive ears of the father immediately guessed that something was amiss. Said the old man: "Who is there? Surely these heavy steps are not of son."
The king replied, "O, noble Brahmin, you are right. I am king Dasharatha."
"Where is my son, O king. What has happened to him?", inquired the mother.
With great sorrow and heavy heart the king narrated the unfortunate event that led to the sad death of their son. Hearing this tragic news the mother collapsed there only, never to come back to life again. The father, under great agitation and distress, thus cursed the king:
"O King, you have indiscriminately killed a Brahmin boy. Our sorrow cannot be described in words; our son was our only support. You have left us with no choice but to die. You have separated us from our most beloved son. I send a curse to you, O king, that you shall also die experiencing the pain and suffering of separation from your son."Soon the old man also left his body for good.
What could the king do, but shed tears and return back to his palace! Years passed by and the king started forgetting this sad incidence in his life about which he did not mention to anyone including his three wives.

Bodhayana amavasya
The huge armies of the Kauravas and the Pandavas had gathered on opposite sides.
Duryodhana, the instigator of all the problems, was in conference with his generals, Bheeshma, Drona and Karna.
“Well, the time is at hand,” said Duryodhana. “I want to find an auspicious day for us to start so we can be sure
of victory.”Drona said, “Duryodhana, listen carefully to me.
Sahadeva, the twin brother of Nakula and son of Madri, is a fount of knowledge.
He will be able to help you best with this. If you ask him to help you right after his morning bath and prayers
he cannot refuse you.”
Duryodhana said, “Drona, you are asking me to ask my enemy to help me? Sahadeva is a Pandava.
How can I trust his word?”
Drona reassured Duryodhana and said, “Don’t worry about that. Sahadeva will not utter a lie.
You can trust his word absolutely.”
So the next morning Duryodhana arranged to meet Sahadeva right after his prayers.
“Sahadeva, I know we are enemies,” said Duryodhana. “But I have come to ask you something.
You are duty-bound to tell me the truth.”
“What is it you want?” asked Sahadeva.
“Well”, said Duryodhana, “I would like you to consult the stars and tell me the best time to start battle so that our
armies may be victorious.”
Sahadeva agreed to help him and told him the right time to start the war for the Kauravas would be the coming
amavasya which was only a week away.
Duryodhana thanked him and went away. Now, Krishna overheard the entire conversation and was outraged.
“Sahadeva!” he said. “How can you help our enemies? Why didn’t you tell him a wrong day or refuse to help him
outright?”
Sahadeva said, “Krishna, you know I have to grant whatever one asks of me after my prayers.
And I will only speak the truth.”
Shaking his head in disbelief, Krishna walked away wracking his brain for an idea to save the day.
As he entered his tent, it struck him. Rushing out, he called the Pandavas to his tent.
There he said, “Sahadeva here has gone and told Duryodhana an auspicious time for the start of war.
If we allow them that, they will definitely win. No thanks to you Sahadeva!!!”
The Pandavas were understandably upset and Arjuna asked, “Isn’t there someting you can do, Krishna, to avert this?”
Krishna smiled and said, “I have an idea but I cannot tell you because then Sahadeva will be bound by his promise
to reveal it to Duryodhana. So just follow me implicitly.”
The next morning, Krishna took the Pandavas to the riverside and asked them to pray for their
deceased father (tarpanam). Now the Pandavas were confused.
Yudhisthira said, ‘Krishna why are you asking us to perform this ceremony today? It is not amavasya
when this is usually done.”
Krishna said, “I asked you to trust me. So do as I say.”
So the Pandavas started performing all the rites that were due for their father.
As they started praying, the gods in heaven were confused and started conferring among themselves.
The most confused, of course, were Surya (the sun god) and Chandra (the moon god).
Wondering what Krishna was doing and why, they decided to come down to ask him the reason for this strange
behaviour. The two came down together and asked Krishna, “What is the meaning of this?
Why are you performing these rites when it is not yet amavasya?”
Krishna smiled and said, “No it was not amavasya till the two of you came down together over here.
And now it IS amavasya since the moon and the sun are together. The battle can start today instead!!”
Heartened by this, the Pandavas declared the war had begun and an
outmanoeuvred Duryodhana was forced into battle before it was time. With clever manipulation,
Krishna had managed to keep Sahadeva’s prediction intact and yet make the war unwinnable for the Kauravas.
And because the sun and the moon had rushed down together out of their usual cycle,
there is an extra amavasya called the bodhayana amavasya

Muruga's wedding and the holy ash

Story Time
To start with I shall begin with a story on Lord Ganesha :
Once upon a time, the gods in heaven, set up a task force headed by Brahma to give a mango that contained all the knowledge of the universe to the most deserving god. Brahma approached Shiva and Parvati who were spending some quality time with the kids, Ganesha and Muruga(also known as Subramanya), in the Himalayas. Brahma said, "O Shiva, here is a fruit that represents the knowledge of this universe. We would like you to give it to the most deserving god."
Shiva said, "All right Brahma I will do it. Parvati, can you suggest to whom I should give this to?"
Parvati said, "I think Muruga and Ganesha are both equally deserving of this fruit. One is unmatched for his bravery and knowledge, the other for his intelligence and grace. How do we decide?" (no nepotism, of course, since gods are impartial!!!) Brahma and the retinue of devas agreed with Parvati.
Shiva mulled over this problem for a bit and said, "I have it! They can have a race to see who wins! The winner will get the fruit" (a strategy used by most parents even today to achieve results with siblings).
"But what kind of race?" asked Parvati.
"Well, let them both go around the world thrice and whoever comes back here first will win the mango," said Shiva.
So he called Muruga and Ganesha and explained the rules and what the prize would be. Both the brothers were excited at the prospect.
Muruga said, "Hah! Ganesha, you on your silly little mount (a rat) won't even have taken off and I will be back to win the prize!"
To which Ganesha said, "Well since you're so confident, and I know I can beat you, how about I give you a handicap? You can even do an entire round before I even start."
Muruga decided his brother had gone crazy or was being lazy and wanted to finish his lunch instead. So after bidding his parents goodbye and taking their blessings, he sat on his mount, a beautiful peacock, and took off around the world. After he finished one round, he saw Ganesha still seated where he was and finishing the remains of his lunch, with one modaka left on his plate. He thought to himself, "There's no way Ganesha can beat me now!!!" He waved at Ganesha, who waved back, and went on his way.
Now Parvati watched the whole exchange between the brothers and asked Ganesha worriedly, "Aren't you going to at least TRY to win the fruit? Muruga has a huge lead over you. And not that I don't love you, but you're a little out of shape!!! You had better hurry up!!"
"Dont worry, ma," said Ganesha. "I'm giong to win." Burping a little since he'd overeaten as usual, Ganesha washed his hands and face and smoothed out his clothes. He then summoned his little mount and approached Shiva and Parvati who were seated together. He said, "O mother and father, Shiva and Shakti, together you represent the entire universe. All the elements of the universe are enshrined within you. For me, you are the entire universe." He prostrated before them and with his hands folded went around them thrice lost in deep meditation and with utmost devotion. Amazed by his grace and knowledge and devotion, Shiva, Parvati, Brahma and the assembled gods blessed Ganesha and gave him the fruit.
Just then Muruga entered their presence with a triumphant smile when he saw Ganesha. He assumed Ganesha hadn't even tried to win. When he saw him holding the fruit instead, Muruga was furious. "What is the meaning of this?" he demanded. "I won the race and HE got the fruit?"
When Shiva explained what had happened, Muruga stormed off in anger to roam the earth and was later pacified as the deity of Palani .
And so, Ganesha is revered by all for his knowledge and wisdom and is beloved throughout India and even abroad. Go Ganesha! Om Namah Ganesha!(For a story of muruga and Parvathi click here it is about how the holy ash(vibhoothi)came into existence)

Save your Girl child -
A seemingly normal and affluent family of four in Mumbai, India. The 21 year old daughter, a silent sufferer for over 10 years, decided to bring the truth to light, when her 15 year old sister was in danger of meeting a similar fate.
The superstitious parents under the influence of an astrologer, had been sexually abusing the girl, all in the hope of becoming richer!
This news was followed by news of charges of sexual exploitation of six physically challenged girls, by the teaching staff, of a rehabilitation centre for the deaf, dumb and mentally challenged, being run by an NGO in Shimla.
I don't know what to say on the above. I feel selfishly thankful, that my own childhood had been a safe one. That I went to bed secure and feared only the darkness and the unknown. That there was no monster in flesh and blood, lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce on me while the world looked the other way.
I don't even feel like preaching. I don't want to remember the lyrics of the song Heal the World by Michael Jackson.
After all what is the use of saying things that only a certain section of us believe in, while the perpetrators of crime continue, unabashed and unchecked.

Confidence and Trust - So inspiring
Story told by a man which is most frightening yet thought-provoking experiences of his life.
He had been on a long flight. The first warning of the approaching problems came when the sign on the airplane flashed on: “Fasten your seat belts.”
Then, after a while, a calm voice said, “We shall not be serving the beverages at this time as we are expecting a little turbulence. Please be sure your seat belt is fastened.”
As he looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive. Later, the voice of the announcer said, “We are so sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us.”
And then the storm broke. The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightening lit up the darkening skies and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash.
The man confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. He said, “As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying.
The future seemed ominous and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm. And then, I suddenly saw a girl to whom the storm meant nothing. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat and was reading a book.
Everything within her small world was calm and orderly. Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again; then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world. When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm, when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid.”
The man could hardly believe his eyes. It was not surprising therefore, that when the plane finally reached its destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, he lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time.
Having commented about the storm and behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid.
The sweet child replied,
“Sir, my Dad is the pilot and he is taking me home.”
when you are sure of your self, your confident level is steady and you are never shaky you do the things calmly and successfullyIsn't this the way trust and confidence in the one you love ought to be?
long back i had read a story of how a gal while crossing a delicate bridge on the river asks her dad to hold the hand when he asks her to hold she says no dad i might leave your hand but if you hold it you wouldn;t ever leave my hand.It takes a lot to gain the level of confidence.Trust once broken is very hard to regain. Its like the baby whom you throw up in air and the baby laughs since he is sure you wouldn't let him fall.
